But the biggest change is not simply about how my job as a web developer has evolved. More importantly, it has changed the way I think about the value I can bring to my clients.
In 2026, building a successful website has become both more challenging and more exciting. With the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), almost anyone can now use AI-powered tools to create a website. As a result, simply being able to build an attractive website is no longer enough.
Many of my clients initially believe that web development is mainly about creating a website that looks professional and visually appealing. The reality is very different today.
A beautiful website is only the beginning.

What can the website actually do for the business?
Can it generate leads? Can it attract customers through Google? Can it automate enquiries and bookings? Can it integrate with WhatsApp, social media, POS or other business systems? Can it protect customer information? Can AI be used to automate repetitive tasks? Is it Secure ? Can my services be recommended by Chatgpt and Claude? Analytics Reporting?
These are the questions that define modern web development.
For me, the role of a web developer in 2026 is no longer simply to build websites. It is to understand a client’s business, identify where technology can create value, and build digital solutions that help the business operate more efficiently, reach more customers and grow.

Misconception in 2026
I also find that there is a common misconception among clients that because developers can now use AI to write code, the cost of web development should automatically become cheaper.
In reality, AI can make certain parts of development faster, but it does not remove the complexity of building and maintaining a reliable website.
I often describe modern web development as putting together a large jigsaw puzzle. AI can help us create some of the individual pieces, but an experienced developer still needs to understand how those pieces fit together and, more importantly, what to do when something goes wrong.
Creating a website with tools such as Claude Code is one thing. Maintaining a real production website is another.
What happens when the database becomes corrupted? What happens when an .htaccess configuration points traffic to the wrong location? What if the CDN is incorrectly configured, DNS records are wrong, an API suddenly stops communicating with another system, or a deployment causes part of the website to fail?
AI can certainly help diagnose these problems, but it cannot always understand the entire environment or fix the problem automatically.
This is where experience becomes valuable.
After nearly 14 years in web development, I have learned that writing code is only one part of the job. The real work involves understanding how the database, server, DNS, CDN, APIs, security, application code and third-party services work together.
AI has changed the tools we use, but it has not eliminated the need for technical knowledge and experience.
